A visitor visa is required for foreign nationals who wish to enter Canada temporarily for tourism, visiting friends/family or business purposes. It is different from a work or study permit.
With a visitor visa, you can stay in Canada for up to 6 months at a time. The visa is usually valid for 10 years or one entry. Those from visa-exempt countries do not need a visa for short stays up to 6 months.
To be approved for a Canadian visitor visa, you must prove:
- Purpose of Travel: Document the reason for your visit whether tourism, family visit or business meeting. Provide itinerary and letter of invitation if visiting someone.
- Sufficient Funds: Show that you have enough funds to cover expenses in Canada. Minimum is CAD $2,500 but higher amounts may be required in some cases.
- Ties to Home Country: Demonstrate sufficiently strong ties that will compel you to return home after your temporary stay, such as job, family, property ownership etc.
- Admissibility: Get police certificate to show you have no criminal record and complete a medical exam if asked.
To apply, you need to submit either an online or paper application which includes:
- Forms: Application for Temporary Resident Visa Made Outside of Canada
- Family Information: Form to include your relations and trip details
- Fees: $100 CAD visa application fee plus $85 biometrics fee
- Passport Bio-data Page: Certified scan or photocopy of passport page showing validity
- Photos: Add the photo specification page generated during the online application process
- Supporting Documents: Financial statements, invitation letters, travel bookings, ties to home proofs
Processing time can be 48 hours or up to several months depending on whether you need additional security checks or documents.
